“Building Blocks” is the name for team tasked with organizing fund-raising by selling completed quilt blocks at guild quilt show.

A new (additional) block has been selected to sell at the quilt show.  This pattern is called “Road to California”.         9 Inch (finished) block

The “Road to California” block consists of 9 squares
  • each square measures 3.5” (unfinished)
  • 4 half-square triangle squares (HST) in black and white
  • 5 simple squares - center block and 4 corners in fabric(s) of your choice (does not need to be a solid color)

You can create HSTs using the “Magic 8” method or make HSTs using your own preferred method.

Four 3.5” HST are needed for each block. Guild will provide black and white fabric for HSTs to maintain consistency across blocks. Request fabric kits online here:
Building Block Kits

You will need to provide for each block:
  • five  3.5” x 3.5” squares of your fabric choice

To create HST:
  • a 9“ fabric square pair (one black and one white) yields 8 black and white HSTs - enough for two 9.5” (9” finished) trimmed blocks

  • visit https://www.thesprucecrafts.com/easy-half-square-triangle-units-for-quilts-2821466 for illustrated directions

  • HSTs will be slightly larger than 3.5”. Please trim to 3.5” before assembling block

To complete block:
Assemble 9-patch as pictured above. Completed “Road to California”
block should be trimmed to measure 9.5”.

                                                     Instructions for original Star Block:

  • blocks will be offered for sale in two sizes – 6.5” and 9.5”  (blocks will finish at 6” and 9”)
  • first selected pattern is an 8-point star

  •  The block consists of 9 squares
    • 4 V-blocks – use template or V-block trimmer ruler (see videos)
    • 4 corner squares – background fabric (white or cream)
    • 1 center square - center block can match the points or match the background
    • 9” finished block – 3.5” squares (unfinished)
    • 6” finished block – 2.5” squares (unfinished)

  • A notebook of quilt designs using this block in 2 sizes is available to encourage ideas

  • 6.5” blocks can easily be set on point within a 9.5” block. Setting triangles will be white or cream. A 6.5” square of background fabric  provides 2 setting triangles for 6.5” block.

  • to provide consistency among blocks, white and cream tone on tone fabric will be available for use in creating blocks

  • to protect our guild's reputation, prewash fabrics that are likely to bleed

  • Blocks created not using the selected pattern will also be accepted and made available.  We would like to test the idea that if we hold the size consistent then a single pattern is not necessary.

  • There will be a “seconds” pile offered at a lower price for blocks that cannot be trimmed to 6.5” or  9.5”, so bring those not-right-size blocks  anyway

Task Plan:

  • Please keep this project in mind when completing projects – make an extra block with your leftover fabrics!

  • We will need volunteers to create sample projects from some of our blocks.  Give some thought to ideas that use one to five blocks in creative ways.

  • price will be determined at a later date. Please check with other guilds to see if they have sold blocks and what their price points are

Quilt Show:
  • Fabric handling directions to be provided
  • Color catchers will be available – we will see if we can get signage, samples or donations from manufacturer
  • if space allows, a design wall should be set up
  • sample projects can be raffled or part of penny sale
