Seabreeze Challenge Quilt 2025-2026
Kerin and Gail explain the challenge rules while
demonstrating how being silly goes a long way to
fulfilling the challenge's purpose.
And by bears, we mean any and all kinds of bears. But we're not going to give you a list. We want you to be creative, use your imagination, and have some fun.
The method for meeting the theme is up to you.
Possibilities include, but are not limited to:
create an image of a bear
- use a panel with a picture of a bear
- use fabric that depicts a bear theme
We do have one bear-related requirement to tie all of the quilts together. You must include at least one traditional bear's paw block, any size, on the front of the quilt.
Size requirements:
We are allowing larger than normal quilts for this challenge to accommodate baby quilts. The total perimeter of the quilt must be no smaller than 80" and no larger than 144".
For example, size options meeting this requirement include 20" x 20" (80" perimeter), 18"x24" (84" perimeter), 30"x40" (140" perimeter), and 6"x36" (144" perimeter).
Other requirements:
- Only new quilts, started once the challenge is announced
- Following a commercial pattern is okay, but no kits allowed
- Quilts must be quilted by the entrant. Machine quilt, tie it, hand quilt, any method is acceptable as long as the entirety of the quilt is executed by the entrant.
- Quilts must be complete (either bound or turned)
- Include a hanging sleeve for displaying in May
Awards:
In keeping with the goal of having fun, there will not be any awards for technique. This year's awards at the May 2026 meeting reveal will be as follows:
- "You Nailed It!" award for best interpretation of the theme
- "Makes Me Giggle!" award for most humorous quilt
- "Our Fav!" award for viewer's choice
Expand your horizons, don't go for the bear minimum. We want to celebrate your creativity, so participate, don't hibernate!
Download a copy of the rules (very few) here.
Final quilts are to be completed by the May meeting.

Hanging Sleeve
Kindly include a hanging sleeve on the back of your quilt.
Prior to adding binding:
To make a quilt hanging sleeve, cut a strip of fabric 8.5 inches tall by the width of your
quilt minus 2 inches. Hem the short ends, fold in half lengthwise (wrong sides together),
and press. Line up the raw edges to the top of the quilt and baste the top edge. Prepare
and add your binding as you normally would. Finally, hand sew the bottom edge of the
hanging sleeve to the back of your quilt.
There are tons of video You Tube tutorials that will show you how to do this.
After adding binding:

edges of the hanging sleeve to the back top edge of the quilt, creating "slack" for the
rod.
